A lot of what you see in Keryx Maps — space-weather activity, storm tracking, smoke and air-quality layers — comes from public data feeds run by NOAA, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Keeping those feeds flowing reliably is one of the most important things we do behind the scenes.
Recently, several of those NOAA feeds, including the space-weather data from the Space Weather Prediction Center, suddenly stopped responding to our servers. After some digging, the cause became clear: NOAA had moved those feeds behind a new security layer that blocks traffic from entire ranges of data-center IP addresses. Our servers live in a data center, so practically overnight they were being turned away at the door, even though the data itself is public and freely available.
Here’s the part we’re proud of: we didn’t find out from a user report. We found out from our own systems. We recently stood up a new monitoring service, one that runs on our own servers, not a third-party service, that watches for exactly this kind of problem, and it flagged the failing connections almost immediately. That early warning is the difference between a quick, quiet fix and days of stale data.
From there, we put a workaround in place the same day to restore the connection and get the data moving again. Space-weather, storm, and smoke layers are all updating normally.
You shouldn’t have noticed a thing and that’s the point. Reliable, up-to-date information is what Keryx Maps is for, especially when it matters most. We’ll keep watching, and we’ll keep the data flowing.
