Family sharing

Invite your family, share the pins you choose, and keep the rest off the family list.

Family sharing is part of the Family plan. You share your plan with up to 4 household members, so there are 5 seats in all. Only the person who pays for the plan can invite or remove people.

  1. 1

    Invite someone

Do this on the account that holds the Family plan.

    1. Open Settings. On a phone, open the menu first. On a computer or in a browser, open the account menu at the top right. Scroll to Family Sharing.
    2. If you see a note that Family Sharing is part of the Family plan, your account is not on that plan, so you cannot invite anyone.
    3. Set up encrypted sync on this device first. If you have not, the invite stops and asks you to Set up encrypted sync. Family pins are locked with a key that travels through sync.
    4. Type your family member's email in Invite a family member by email and tap Invite. They get an email with a link.
    5. If you see Open Keryx Maps on that device to invite, your family key was set up on another device. Invite from that device, or remove existing members and pending invitations first.

Your list shows each person as Pending until they join, then Active. The counter reads how many of your 4 extra seats are used. If an email gets lost, tap the circular-arrows icon next to a pending person to send it again. Its tooltip says Resend invitation email.

  2. 2

    Accept an invite

This part is for the person who was invited. Start in a browser, even if you plan to use the app. The app cannot finish the invite for you.

    1. Open the invite email and use the button in it. It opens the sign-up page with your email already filled in. Keep that email address.
    2. Follow the sign-up steps. You verify a phone number with Send Verification Code, then Keryx emails you a sign-in link. Open that link to finish.
    3. Already have a Keryx Maps account? Use the sign-in link lower in the invite email instead. Sign in with the same email. You join the family on sign-in.
    4. To use the app, install it, then sign in with the same email and your password. If you never set a password, tap Forgot password? on the sign-in page and set one.

Then open Settings and find Family Sharing. It should say you are a member of a family group. If you see You have a pending family invitation instead, tap Accept Invitation.

You get full Keryx Maps access while the owner's plan is active. Your own pins are kept off the family list unless you tick Sync to family on them, and your routes are not shared.

Share pins — or keep them off the family list

    Android

    1. Tap Pins at the bottom of the screen.
    2. Tap the round plus button (its label is Add Pin) to make a pin, or open a pin you have and tap Edit.
    3. Tick Sync to family for a pin you want your family to see. Leave it unticked to keep the pin off the family list.
    4. Tap Save Pin. Keryx sends the pin to your family a moment later, if encrypted sync is set up on this phone. You don't need to tap Sync Now for this.

The Visibility box is a separate setting. It does not share the pin with your family. Only Sync to family does.

Un-tick the box, or delete the pin, to take it back out of the shared list. Pins you already shared may stay on devices that have already received them.

A pin you drop from the map is kept off the family list, even if you pick Family/Group - Shared with family in the quick-pin sheet. Open it in Pins and tick Sync to family.

Family pins are locked on your device before they leave it. Keryx cannot read them. Keryx never shares where you are, only the pins you choose.

Sharing a pin with your family is built into the Pins tab of the Android and iPhone apps. Do this step on your phone. Family sharing itself, including your invites and members, works from Settings on every device.

On a computer, the Manage Pins & Waypoints window shows the same Sync to family box, but ticking it there does not send the pin to your family.

Every pin starts off the family list. Nothing is shared unless you tick Sync to family on that pin.

    What your family sees

    Android

    1. Tap Pins, then tap the Shared filter. You see pins you shared and pins your family shared. Everyone in the group can add pins.
    2. Tap Refresh to fetch the latest. It shows when it last synced, or Not yet synced. The list loads when you open Pins and when you tap Refresh. It does not update by itself and nobody is notified.
    3. Tap a family pin to open it. It says Shared by and the person's name. You cannot change it. Tap Save to my pins to keep your own copy that you can edit.

Not seeing family pins? Each device needs encrypted sync. In Family Sharing in Settings, you may see Set up encrypted sync (or restore it with your passphrase or recovery key) to see family pins on this device. Do that, then tap Refresh. If a member still cannot see pins, the owner can tap the key icon next to their name (tooltip Re-send the family key) to email them a new link.

Family members see only the pins that were shared. They never see pins you kept off the family list, your trips or where you are.

    Leave or remove someone

If you are a member: you cannot leave on your own. Ask the plan owner to remove your seat.

    If you own the plan:

    1. Open Settings and find Family Sharing.
    2. Find the person in your list. Tap the person-with-a-minus icon at the right of their row. For someone who has not joined yet, its tooltip says Cancel invitation. For someone who has joined, it says Remove member.
    3. Confirm when asked. That frees a seat, so you can invite someone else.

The person stops getting your plan and stops getting new family pins. Pins already on their device stay there, because Keryx has no way to reach in and delete them. Their own account and their own pins stay theirs.
