Set up alerts that reach you

Get alerts for the places you care about, and make sure your phone lets them through.

Alerts need an active plan or a live trial. They reach you best in the Android, iPhone and desktop apps. In a browser they arrive only while a Keryx Maps tab is open.

  1. 1

Choose the places you get alerts for

Your alerts follow the map regions you have downloaded. Download the places you care about, such as your home region, your work and where family lives.

To download a region, see the Get ready to go offline guide. When something happens inside a region you downloaded, Keryx can send you an alert.

In a browser, nothing is downloaded. Open the Maps page and tap Add Map (streams on demand) for each region you want. Browser alerts cover the maps you added this way.

No region downloaded or added means no regional alerts. Add one first, then come back here.

Alerts need an active plan or a live trial.

Keryx does not issue warnings. Always follow instructions from your local officials.
  2. 2

    Global Alerts

Global Alerts are for big events anywhere in the world, even where you have not downloaded a map. They show a 🌍 badge.

Open Settings and find Notifications. The Global Alerts list has these switches:

    • Large Earthquakes: magnitude 6.5 or greater, anywhere
    • Major Hurricanes: category 3 or greater, anywhere
    • Volcano Warnings
    • Radiation Spikes
    • Tsunami Warnings
    • Space Weather (G3+ / R3+ / S3+)

Turn on the ones you want. Each switch saves as soon as you tap it. You must be signed in to see this list. Turning these off does not stop alerts for regions you downloaded.

Global Alerts reach you in the phone and desktop apps. They do not come to a browser.

  3. 3

    Pick what you’re alerted about

On a phone, open the menu and tap Settings. On a computer, open the account menu at the top right and click Settings. Then go to Notifications.

Under Regional Alerts, these switches only apply inside regions you downloaded:

    • Civil Unrest & Geopolitical
    • Civil Emergency: Take Action Now: evacuation orders, shelter in place and hazardous materials
    • Civil Emergency: Missing Persons
    • Civil Emergency: Public Safety Notices
    • Air Quality (Health)

If you turn off Civil Emergency: Take Action Now, Keryx warns you that you will not be notified of evacuation orders or shelter-in-place warnings for your downloaded maps.

Other hazards in your downloaded regions, such as earthquakes and fires, come with the region. They have no separate switch here.

Leave SMS Alerts alone. It says Coming soon and does nothing yet.

    Let Keryx send notifications

    Android

    1. Keryx asks to send you notifications when you open the app signed in. Tap Allow. Some Android versions do not ask. They allow it already.
    2. If you said no, open Android Settings, then Apps, then Keryx Maps, then Notifications. Turn notifications on.
    3. Close Keryx Maps and open it again. Keryx only sets up alerts when it starts.

    iPhone

    1. Keryx asks to send you notifications when you open the app signed in. Tap Allow.
    2. If you said no, open the iPhone Settings app, then Notifications, then Keryx Maps. Turn on Allow Notifications.
    3. Close Keryx Maps and open it again. Keryx only sets up alerts when it starts.

    Desktop

    1. Open Settings and find Notifications. The desktop app has a Desktop Alerts block. It has no permission prompt.
    2. Check that Enable Desktop Alerts is on and the line below says Monitoring active.
    3. Check Interval says how often Keryx looks for new events. The choices run from every minute to every 15 minutes.
    4. Closing the window hides Keryx in the system tray. It keeps checking there. To stop alerts, quit Keryx from the tray icon menu.
    5. Turn on Launch at Login to have Keryx start with your computer, so alerts arrive from boot.
    6. Your computer decides whether a notification shows. If you never see one, open your computer's notification settings and allow Keryx Maps.

    Web

    1. Open Settings and find Notifications. Look for the Desktop/Browser Alerts block.
    2. Click Enable and choose Allow when your browser asks. If your browser says notifications are blocked, allow them for keryxmaps.com in the browser's site settings.
    3. You get alerts for the maps you added with Add Map (streams on demand).
    4. Alerts arrive only while a Keryx Maps tab is open in your browser. Keryx starts checking after you open Settings in that tab, so open Settings once each time you load Keryx Maps.
    5. Global Alerts do not reach a browser. For alerts when Keryx is not open, use the phone or desktop app.
  5. 5

    Get past Do Not Disturb

    Android

    1. Only the most serious alerts for regions you downloaded can break through Do Not Disturb. Everyday alerts and Global Alerts never do.
    2. Open Settings in Keryx and find Notifications. If you see the button Allow critical alerts to override Do Not Disturb, tap it.
    3. Android opens its Do Not Disturb access list. Find Keryx Maps and turn it on, then go back to Keryx.
    4. The button is gone and a green check says Keryx may override Do Not Disturb. Until you do this, critical alerts still arrive but stay quiet in Do Not Disturb.

    iPhone

    1. Everyday alerts and Global Alerts respect Focus.
    2. Open the iPhone Settings app, then Notifications, then Keryx Maps. If you see Time Sensitive Notifications, turn it on.
    3. If you do not see it, open your Focus in Settings and add Keryx Maps to the apps that are allowed to notify you.
    4. Keep your phone out of a Focus that blocks Keryx Maps, or you may not hear alerts. Do not count on any alert breaking through Focus.

    Desktop

    1. Desktop alerts cannot break through Do Not Disturb. Your computer holds them back while it is on.
    2. Check whether your computer is in a quiet mode. On Windows, look at Do not disturb in the notification area. On a Mac, look at Focus in Control Center. On Linux, look at the Do Not Disturb switch in your notification menu.
    3. Turn it off, or allow Keryx Maps in that mode, if you want alerts to show.

    Web

    1. Browser alerts cannot break through Do Not Disturb or Focus. Your computer holds them back while a quiet mode is on.
    2. Check your computer's quiet mode, such as Focus on a Mac or Do not disturb on Windows, and turn it off or allow your browser.
    3. For alerts that can get past Do Not Disturb, use the Android or iPhone app.
  6. 6

    Check that it works

On your phone, work through this list:

    • At least one region shows as downloaded.
    • Notifications are allowed for Keryx Maps in your phone's own settings.
    • The Global Alerts and Regional Alerts switches you want are on.
    • Your phone is not in Do Not Disturb or Focus, unless you set up the step above.

The phone app has no test button, and alerts only arrive when something really happens. So you may not get one for a while. That is normal.

On a computer, open Settings, then Notifications. Click Send Test Notification in the alerts block. It is called Desktop Alerts in the desktop app and Desktop/Browser Alerts in a browser. If no notification appears, check your computer's notification settings. Keep Keryx running in the tray (desktop app) or a Keryx Maps tab open (browser).

Alerts need an active plan or a live trial. Keryx does not issue warnings. Keep your local emergency alerts on too.
