Move to a new phone

Bring your pins, area studies, trips and settings to a new phone with Sync.

Sync works on the Individual and Family plans, and during a live trial. If your plan has lapsed, Sync is off. What is already on your old phone stays there.

  1. 1

    Before you switch

Do this on your old phone or computer, while you still have it.

    1. Open Settings and find Cloud Sync. It should say Sync is configured. If it asks you to set up sync, do that first.
    2. Make sure you know your sync passphrase. You need it on the new phone, and Keryx cannot recover it for you. Your 24-word recovery key works on a new phone only if you saved the recovery file (Download as File) or ticked Also keep an encrypted copy on the Keryx server when you made the key. If you did neither, the words will not open anything on a new phone.
    3. Tap Sync Now to upload your latest changes. On a phone, open the Sync tab at the bottom of the screen, then tap Sync Now. On a computer, open Data Backup & Import in Settings and click Sync.

Sync runs only when you start it. There is no background sync. Anything you change after your last sync will not reach the new phone.

  2. 2

Install and sign in on the new phone

    Android

    1. Install the Keryx Maps app on the new phone. You can get it from keryxmaps.com/download.
    2. Open the app and tap Sign In. Use the same account you use on your old phone.
    3. Open the menu and tap Settings.
    4. Scroll to Cloud Sync. You should see We found your synced data. If you do, go on to the next step.

    iPhone

    1. Install the Keryx Maps app on the new iPhone. You can get it from keryxmaps.com/download.
    2. Open the app and tap Sign In. Use the same account you use on your old phone.
    3. Open the menu and tap Settings.
    4. Scroll to Cloud Sync. You should see We found your synced data. If you do, go on to the next step.

    Desktop

    1. The same steps work on a new computer. Install the Keryx Maps desktop app from keryxmaps.com/download.
    2. Open the app and click Sign In. Use the same account.
    3. Open the account menu at the top right and click Settings.
    4. Scroll to Cloud Sync. You should see We found your synced data. If you do, go on to the next step.

    Web

    1. The same steps work in a new browser. Go to keryxmaps.com and click Sign In. Use the same account.
    2. Open the account menu at the top right and click Settings.
    3. Scroll to Cloud Sync. You should see We found your synced data. If you do, go on to the next step.
    4. In a browser, your data is kept in that browser only. Clearing the browser's site data removes it, so Sync again after you change anything.
Use the same account email. Sync is tied to your account.
  3. 3

Restore with your passphrase or recovery key

    1. In Cloud Sync, type your sync passphrase into the Sync passphrase box. It is at least 8 characters.
    2. Tap Restore My Data. Wait for it to finish.

Forgot the passphrase? Your recovery key helps on a new phone only if you saved the recovery file or kept the encrypted copy on your Keryx account (see Before you switch). Then tap Forgot your passphrase? Use your recovery key. Type your 24 words, or choose Import recovery file to load the file you saved. Then tap Restore with recovery key.

If you see Restored, with a warning., your pins and other data came across, but your area studies did not. Run a sync again to retry them.

The Device recovery section in Settings uses a different passphrase, called a Recovery passphrase. It is not your sync passphrase. Do not type it into the restore box.

Do not tap Skip unless you want to leave your synced data behind. Do not use Can't restore? Start over here unless you have lost both your passphrase and your recovery key. See the last step.

  4. 4

    Sync and check

Restoring already pulls your data across. Check that it worked.

    1. Open your pins. You should see the ones from your old phone. Check one of your area studies and your saved trips too.
    2. Sync once more. On a phone, open the Sync tab and tap Sync Now. On a computer, click Sync in Data Backup & Import in Settings.
    3. Look for a Sync complete message. It says how many items were uploaded and received.

From now on, sync only when you choose to. Sync on whichever device you changed, then sync on the other one.

  5. 5

What comes across — and what doesn’t

Comes across: your pins and collections, area studies, trips, vehicle profiles, saved routes, recorded tracks, saved destinations and preferences.

Does not come across: downloaded maps and offline routing data. These are large, so each device keeps its own. Download them again on the new phone. The Get ready to go offline guide shows how.

Family pins are not part of your synced data, but your family key comes back when you restore Sync. Then, in the phone app, open Pins › Shared and tap Refresh. See the Family sharing guide.

Saved routes come across as their stops. The new phone works out the line itself when you open the route.

  6. 6

    If you lost the passphrase

Try your recovery key first. See Restore with your passphrase or recovery key above.

If you have neither, nobody can open your synced copy. Not you, and not Keryx. Your only option is to start over.

Think before you start over on the new phone. Starting over deletes the only synced copy and uploads what is on this phone. If the new phone has nothing on it, you end up with no copy at all. If your old phone still has your data, start over there instead. On the old phone, open Cloud Sync, tap Remove Sync, then reopen Settings. You will see We found your synced data and Can't restore? Start over. Follow the steps below on the old phone, then restore on the new phone with the new passphrase.

    1. In Cloud Sync, tap Can't restore? Start over.
    2. Read the notice. Starting over permanently deletes your synced copy on our server, and your server recovery copy.
    3. Type DELETE, then tap Delete synced data.
    4. Choose a new passphrase and finish setup. What is on this phone is kept and uploaded again under the new passphrase.

Your other devices stop syncing until you restore them with the new passphrase.
